Description

The U.S. has more immigrants than any other country in the world. And while everyone has heard the refrain, “America is a nation of immigrants,” this is a highly contentious issue. Indeed, immigrants and refugees have been at the center of intense cultural and political backlash in recent years. This course examines the context of contemporary immigration to the U.S., featuring its challenges and controversies. Students will gain foundational knowledge of global migration and immigration trends to better understand the current so-called “crisis.” Topics include: Refugees & Asylum Seekers, Issues at the Border, Detention & Deportation, Undocumented Migrants & DREAMers, Humanitarian Assistance, Gender & Migration, Race & Religion, and the Economic Impact of Immigrants. Migration is the issue of our time. With climate change making many regions uninhabitable, global conflicts continuing unabated, and international economic inequality widening, the need for people to move across lifetime. This course will provide student with tools to understand this global phenomenon and the impact it has on people’s lives.
