Community and Youth Activism

In this course we will explore the long history of community-based youth organizing in the United States. Starting with the history of social movements involving youth organizers at its core will set a tone for current examination of mobilizers who are actively engaged in responding to social problems such as white supremacy, police brutality, gun control, drugs, homelessness, healthcare, education, and poverty. Students will be also exposed to the role of advocacy and activism in the field of youth-development. Having a foundation in theoretical overview of youth-based community organizing will then lead to students in this course being able to apply theory to practice. Students will be introduced to skills such as consensus building, conducting listening sessions, needs and assets mapping and using an intersectional analysis to inform organizing efforts. Field-based opportunities will be presented by exposure to working practitioners and experts as well as community-projects where students will participate in hands-on activism.
