Designing Inclusive Curriculum for Diverse Learners
Department(s)
Description
Curricula are a valuable tool for teachers and other adults who seek to engage with and educate youth. They provide a step-by-step guide to reach desired outcomes in school and out-of-school settings. However, curricula are not immune to the biases that affect society. In fact, without conscious planning and intentional effort, curricula can perpetuate the marginalization and oppression of certain groups including youth of color. In this course, we will examine why and how a curriculum is designed. In addition, we will reframe our focus from traditional curricula which often have a foundation of white middle class values, to explore how curricula can highlight the experiences and assets of many intentionally ignored groups such as Black, Latinx, Indigenous communities. Using culturally responsive metrics, students will evaluate current curricula and use this knowledge to develop their own curriculum. Universal design for learning will provide the foundation for all developed curricula, ensuring that ALL students, including those with disabilities, can meaningfully participate in the lessons and assessments. At the end of the course, students will leave with 1) a number of curricular resources 2) a knowledge of how to critically analyze an existing curriculum and 3) a peer-reviewed original curriculum.
