Course Title

Youth Development in Religious Spaces

Department(s)

Description

Using liberation theology as a foundation, this course will explore religion through multiple perspectives including feminism, womanism, and various communities of color in the United States. Beginning with a discussion about the development and purpose of religion, the course will then transition into the challenges organized religion, particularly White Evangelical Christianity, faces presently including racism, misogyny, bigotry and the politicization of religion. Following an assessment of the current state of religion in the U.S., students will take an in-depth look at Black, Womanist, Latino/a, Asian American, Native American, LGBTQ and Feminist theologies. Using the knowledge gained through their exploration of liberation theologies and research about youth and religion, students will reflect weekly about their own interaction with the materials while developing a greater understanding of how the principles of liberation theology can be applied to youth.
