Description

This course will be taught by experts who hold positions in management and leadership in nonprofit organizations. Students will be given a solid foundation on the history of the nonprofit sector in the United States as well as institutions around the world which will offer a global perspective into nonprofit management. Students will examine the various requirements of managing a nonprofit including effective fund development strategies, governance and accountability of nonprofit boards, staff supervision and development, program evaluation, engaging community, strategic management theory and practice, communications and marketing, the role of nonprofits in policymaking, and nonprofit finance. Students will learn skills such as writing grant proposals, developing program plans, utilizing strategic planning tools, and creating training for staff. Throughout the course, we will examine real-world examples and review the theories and practices that apply to them. Time will be spent closely investigating the role and work of nonprofit leaders in the field of Youth Studies and the steps that are necessary for successful leadership in this field. We will also explore how emotional intelligence, diversity, equity and inclusion, collaboration, and partnerships are essential to effective leadership. This course will promote models of organizational leadership that are steeped in positive youth development principles and practices, a participatory approach, a culture of care, ethical practice, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Students will leave the course with a greater awareness of the role of nonprofits in society as well as essential skills in leading a nonprofit.
