Description
This seminar style course will expose students to the history and core commitments of the solidarity economy. The course will delve deeply into the ways in which the field of youth development can use SE practices to increase youth/community resilience, sustainability, self-determination, strength and power. Students will learn about mutual aid networks, intergenerational attempts at building local food systems; youth-driven community WIFI; intergenerational time-banks; and organizations working to democratize local energy and water infrastructure. Students will learn about worker-owned cooperatives and consider their role in addressing critiques of traditional non-profit governance models. The course will also provide examples of ways that young people have been supported to start their own worker-owned cooperatives to address community needs.
